IMPHAL, Feb 2: Thoubal division PWD sub-division I AE Sorokhaibam Menjor
Singh, who had been abducted by cadres of the underground People`s United
Liberation Front, PULF was released after five days captivity late yesterday
evening.Menjor, who spoke to mediapersons at his home at Charangpat Mayai Leikai
this morning, told mediapersons that he was let go by his captors at around 7:15
pm at Lilong bazar.
Recalling his ordeal, he informed that he had been abducted by some five persons
on the evening of January 28 last after waylaying him on his way home from
office at a spot at Usoipokpi.
He said he was kept blindfolded for the next five days at an undisclosed place

following the brutal murder of a businessman, whose dead body was recovered in a
field near the Rajiv Bhavan yesterday morning. The deceased has been identified
as Naziruddin Ahmed (56), son of late Abdul Zalil of Bandia village adjacent to
Mangaldai town, who earned his livelihood as a petty businessman.

IMPHAL, Feb 18: The Joint Action Committee (JAC), constituted against the
killing of a youth by Imphal East police on February 15, has called a 48-hour
bandh in Manipur demanding fulfilment of their demands. Soram Rojit, a class XII
student, was shot dead by the police at Hatta Golapati in Imphal East. Police
suspected the boy to be a militant. JAC president Haokholun Guite said that
Rojit was innocent and demanded an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakhs and a suitable job
for Rojit’s wife from the Government.

Khandu seeks PM’s intervention into abduction by NSCN(SEN, 7-2-08)
ITANGAR, Feb 6: Arunachal
Pradesh Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu has sought the Prime Minister’s
intervention into the reported abduction of youths by militant outfits for
recruitment process.
Official sources said here today that Khandu informed Prime Minister Manmohan
Singh a day after the Wancho Students Union (WSU) claimed that the outfits,
especially NSCN (K), were abducting youths in Tirap district.
“It is a matter of grave concern that despite the district being declared as
Disturbed under Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 and deployment of Army,
the outfit is carrying out their illegal activities with impunity,” Khandu said.

PREPAK activist while police report confirmed slaying of another three suspected

around 10.05 pm yesterday with further searches of nearby spots leading to the
recovery of two 7.65 pistols with two magazines and six rounds besides one 36

Commandos during an encounter at a pla-ce in between Naran Konjil and Samurou
under Wang-oi PS on Feb 7 night have been taken away by their respective
families after post -mortem at the mortuary of RIMS Hospital here today.
The slain UGs were Nao-rem Boboi (24) s/o Ibohal of Kakwa Naorem Leikai,
Khai-dem Boker (24) s/o Ibobi of Kakwa Huidrom Leikai and Santosh Pradhan of
Mantripukhri, but was staying at Kakwa Asem Leikai.

established.
He was one Md Abdul Karim (47) s/o Md Amuba of Kairang Mayai Leikai.
According to his family members, Md Abdul Karim was a innocent person who did

Shillong: One person was beaten to death by unknown miscreants in
Laban area of the city recently.The victim, identified as Anand Sharma, was
called by his friends to meet them before being assaulted near Harison Bridge
and then dumped on the road. He succumbed to his injuries at Woodland Hospital,
Shillong.In an FIR filed with Laban police, one Mona Nongrum, brother-in-law of
Anand Sharma, stated that Mr Sharma had gone on a bike to meet his friends after
receiving a call from them at about 7.15 pm of January 28 last. At around 9.45
pm, Mr Nongrum got a phone call from his friend Kmen Sing Nongkynrih, informing
him that his brother-in-law Mr Sharma was assaulted by five unknown persons near
Harison Bridge and that he was lying unconscious on the road.

home ministry are anything to go by, four of the northeastern states accounted
for the majority of violent incidents in the region last year with Manipur
taking the top spot by a small margin. The statistics are based on detailed
figures of the last two years’ rise and fall of violence in the
insurgency-affected region. Of the seven states, Manipur, Assam, Tripura and
Nagaland were categorised as violence-prone. Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh were
deemed peaceful.

United Liberation Front (PULF) tonight announced that it would release Naorem
Kishore Singh, the power department engineer it had abducted five days ago.The
news came within hours of the employees of the Manipur power department
threatening to disconnect electricity supply if their colleague was not freed by
his abductors.Though the PULF had specified that it would free the official
tonight, police did not have any report of him being released till the filing of
this report.

Union today claimed that 39 students were abducted by the Khaplang faction of
the NSCN from six villages in Tirap district last month but the police and
district administration have done nothing to ensure their release. The apex
students’ organisation of Arunachal Pradesh today served an ultimatum to the
government saying that it would launch a statewide agitation if the children
were not released within 10 days.Some of those kidnapped are below seven years

today and killing another member of the non-tribal trading community in

Hardware on Dimapur’s Church Road around 1pm, killing the manager instantly and
leaving two more persons critically injured. The blast also triggered a blaze,
but fire-tenders arrived quickly and doused the flames.Police officials were
reluctant to comment on the incident, thought to be the outcome of resistance to
extortion by a splinter group of the NSCN (Isak-Muivah).

Imphal, Feb. 8: Nearly 100 protesters made an abortive
attempt to storm the office of Manipur chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh this
afternoon demanding action against the killing of a youth they said was
innocent. The protesters from Urup Makha Leikai in Imphal East accused the
police of killing “an innocent” youth in custody and demanded action against the
personnel involved in the case. Police last night gunned down a youth identified
as Md Qudus Ali, a 22-year-old newly married youth of the locality, on a village
road not very far from his home. The police claimed that Ali was gunned down in
an encounter and said one 9mm pistol with ammunition was found on him. They also
claimed to have recovered incriminating documents of Peoples United Liberation
Front from the slain youth.

IMPHAL, Feb 8: Residents of Urup village, in Imphal east
district, have raised a ruckus over the killing of a local youth by state police
commandos yesterday evening at Thambalkhong insisting that he had been picked up
from the office complex of the DC, Imphal east yesterday afternoon by the
police, only to be shot in cold blood later.
Residents of the village, mostly womenfolk, thronged the chief minister`s
bungalow this afternoon, confronting the police, to register their protest
against the killing and submit a memorandum.
The youth whose identity was established as Md Qudus Ali, alias Bobocha, 22
years, son of Hayet Ali of Urup village in Imphal east was shot dead by the
commandos of the Imphal east district police last night at around 7.10 pm at
Thambalkhong, as per official sources.
Police sources said the youth, who was described as a suspected PULF militant,
was killed in firing by the police commandos when the youth attempted to escape
after being stopped for checking. The sources also claimed recovery of a .32
revolver.

IMPHAL, Feb 9: The state government is to conduct a high
level inquiry into the shooting incident at Thambalkhong, in Imphal east
district, on February 7 evening in which a youth who had allegedly been picked
up from the Imphal east DC office complex had been killed by Manipur police
commandos.
A commitment in this regard was made by chief minister O Ibobi Singh today in a
meeting with representatives of the JAC formed in connection with the killing of
the youth, namely Md Qudus Ali of Urup Salanpham Makha Leikai.
Qudus Ali, it may be mentioned, was shot dead by commandos of the Imphal east
district police on Thursday night at Thambalkhong under Porompat police station
in what was described as an encounter. Police had said the victim was a
suspected PULF cadre, and also claimed recovery of a handgun with ammunition
from the deceased.

Suspected UGs kill ex-PREPAK

IMPHAL, Feb 9: Unidentified persons suspected to be
underground activists shot dead an ex-cadre of the PREPAK this evening at round
4:10 pm at his home at Singjamei Sorokhaibam Leikai under Singjamei police
station.
The victim, identified as Sorokhaibam Tomba alias Surjit, 32, died at RIMS
hospital this evening at around 4:50 pm. He sustained bullet wounds in the upper
chest and upper abdomen.
As per reports, the victim had recently been pulled up by the PREPAK for
carrying out extortion in the name of the party. He had however been handed over
unharmed to his family yesterday.
According to family sources, two unidentified persons came to the house at
around 4 pm, and asked his whereabouts.

IMPHAL, Feb 16: Some unidentified gunmen suspected to be
underground PREPAK cadres shot dead a youth this evening around 7.45 pm at
Laphupat Tera Laimang under Thoubal police station.
According to reliable sources, the incident occurred when about four armed men
suspected to be PREPAK cadres brought an unidentified youth at the outskirts of
Laphupat Terakhunou Laimang this evening and shot at his head at point blank
range.
The source said the youth died at the spot, and the gumen left the spot
hurriedly.

Lamlai Assembly segment, who has been missing after he was picked up by Assam
Rifles troops on January 27 at Moreh, with a public meeting held today at his
native village deciding to launch a boycott of the Assam Rifles in all Kom areas
unless he is released.The public meeting, held today at the Uran Chiru community
hall, decided to issue an ultimatum demanding Abee Chiru`s release within two
days.

IMPHAL, Feb 15: The Observatory for the Protection of
Human Rights Defenders, a joint programme of the World Organisation Against
Torture (OMCT) and the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) has made
an appeal for the early release of peace activist and journalist Lachit Bordoloi
who was picked up by the police in Assam recently.
The appeal sent to the Centre for Organisation Research and Education (CORE) for
mass circulation has called on people from all walks of life to write to the
Indian authorities for taking all necessary measures to guarantee, in all
circumstances, the physical and psychological integrity of Lachit Bordoloi;
Release Lachit Bordoloi immediately and unconditionally, as his detention is
arbitrary since it only aims at sanctioning his human rights activities; Put an
end to any act of harassment, including at the judicial level, against Bordoloi
as well as against all human rights defenders in India; Comply with the
provisions of the Declaration on Human Rights Defenders adopted by the UN
General Assembly on December 9, 1998, in particular Article 1, which states that
"everyone has the right, individually or collectively, to promote the protection
and fulfilment of human rights and fundamental freedoms at the national and
international levels", as well as Article 12.2, which provides that "the State
shall take all necessary measures to ensure the protection by the competent
authorities of everyone, individually or in association with others, against any
violence, threats, retaliation, de facto or de jure adverse discrimination,
pressure or any other arbitrary action as a consequence of his or her legitimate
exercise of the rights referred to in the present Declaration"; and Guarantee
the respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms in accordance with the
Universal Declaration on Human Rights and other international human rights
instruments ratified by India.

Manipur to probe youth’s killing(NPT,

Imphal, Feb 9 (EPNS): Manipur government will conduct a
high level inquiry into the killing of a youth by Manipur police on Thursday at
Thambalkhong, Imphal East.
The government decided to conduct the inquiry following a meeting between Chief
Minister O. Ibobi Singh and a Joint Action Committee (JAC). The victim, Md Qudus
Ali (20), died after being shot by police. Police suspected him as a PULF
activist and claimed to have recovered a pistol along with some cartridges from
his possession. However, the family of the victim as well as the locals
described the killing as a “cold blooded” murder.

the name of Abee Chiru was ever detained by the 24 Assam Rifles.
A release from the PRO, HQ IGAR(S) has stated that the news reports carried in
the Imphal Free Press on February 15 and 23 regarding the disappearance of the
youth and his subsequent release after issuing a threat by the 24 Assam Rifles
was totally baseless and an attempt to malign the reputation of the Assam
Rifles.
The release further said that no one by the name of Abee Chiru was ever arrested
by the 24 Assam Rifles in Moreh and no FIR had been filed till date at the Moreh
police station regarding the incident.

IMPHAL, Feb 24: The kidnapped executive engineer of the PWD and his wife
Shanti, a section officer in the state IFCD, hailing from Kangla Sangomshang in
Imphal east were released unharmed late today even as womenfolk staged a sit-in
protest against the kidnapping incident today at Lamlong bazar before their
release.
The protesting women stated that is was now high time everybody came out and
expressed strong resentment against the kidnapping of people for ransom as there
is fear of it becoming a deep rooted problem in our society.

Assam (PCPIA) has decided to organize a state level convention on the alleged

its strong resentment at the arrest and detention of Lachit Bordoloi, advisor to

The committee also demanded dropping of all charges framed against him. Lachit

IMPHAL, Feb 25: Two persons have been shot dead by unidentified persons at
Ngarian hills under Irilbung police station at about 11 am today. The two
deceased are identified as Hussain Ahmad (37) and Jitherudin alias Ithem (25)
s/o Zamarudin. The belonged to Yairipok Ningthounai.
It is reported that Hussain Ahmad’s wife Anwari Begum is Zilla a Parishad member
of Changamdabi.
According to family members, the two left for Imphal on a Honda Activa at about
10.30 this morning. The Honda Activa has been recovered from the site where the
two were found shot dead.

international norms applicable in war or conflict situations in the State, said
executive director of Human Rights Alert Babloo Loitongbam.
Babloo was addressing a consultation programme on the Role of International
Criminal Court in the Context of Manipur at Hotel Imphal today. The programme
was jointly organised by the United NGOs Mission Manipur and the North East
Dialogue Forum. Babloo said that the International Criminal Court (ICC)
established in July 2002 with 105 countries as signatories conduct three trials
on different types of cases. The first case refers to systematic pogrom against
a nation, the second to violation of international humanitarian laws at times of
war or conflict situation and the third case refers to crimes against humanity
during time of war or peace.

IMPHAL, Feb 19: Imphal west police commandos gunned down a suspected militant
at Kwakeithel Moirangpurel tonight at around 7 pm even as three members of
different underground groups were nabbed by the security forces, a report said.
Unidentified gunmen also shot dead one 22-year old in Churachandpur town early
today. He was later identified as Lamsianthang, son of late Khamkholian of
Tuitangphai village.

IMPHAL, Feb 20: Kidnapping of an engineer along
with his wife by suspected militants of the Kuki Liberation Army, KLA on their
way to office from Imphal-Ukhrul road yesterday has angered the people of the
locality at Kangla Sangomshang from where the couple hails.
The executive engineer of PWD SW circle, Ngangbam Manglemjao hailing from Kangla
Sangomshang in Imphal east was reportedly kidnapped for an extortion demand of
Rs. 1 crore from the state public works department, a reliable source said.
Shanti Devi, who is also serving as a section officer in the state irrigation
and flood control department, who was with her husband was also taken away by
the suspected Kuki militants.

AFSPA to be discussed at CPI

IMPHAL, Feb 20: The issue of Armed Forces Special Power Act, AFSPA and
territorial integrity of Manipur will be discussed at the national conference of
the Communists Party of India to be held at Hyderabad from March 23 to 27 this
year.
Speaking to journalists in Imphal today, state secretary, CPI, Manipur state
Council, Iboyaima said people of the state could not lead a peaceful life
because of the killings and atrocities meted out by the security forces under
AFSPA.

IMPHAL, Feb 20: Conveying deep concern over the disappearance of one
Abi Chiru (18) of Uran Chiru village, Senapati district after he was reportedly
picked up by Assam Rifles personnel from Moreh Gate no 2 on January 27, the
World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT) Geneva has issued a world wide appeal
including the Government of India for their urgent intervention regarding the
‘arbitrary arrest/enforced disappearance/fear of safety of Abi Chiru.
According to a statement issued by the Centre for Organisation Research and
Education (CORE), the appeal has also been forwarded to the UN Working Group on
Enforced Disappearance and the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and
Fundamental Freedoms of Indigenous Peoples, Prof Rodolfo Stavenhagen.

Sarania body alleges police

NALBARI, Feb 21 – The All Assam Sarania-Kachari Students Union (AASKSU)
has alleged that the Superintendent of Police of Baksa district PK Dutta has
been harassing the Sarania community of the district in the name of searching
top ULFA leader Hira Sarania.
A statement issued by its adviser Ramesh Ch Das said that the SP, along with
CRPF personnel and SULFA men, entered the Sarania villages and terrorised the
villagers uttering some uncivilised words. The villagers were disgusted by his
use of uncivilized words and behaviour. Even some innocent youths were arrested
by the SP and sent to jail without any cause, he added.

the body of a youth which was found with bullet marks at Changpi Khullen under
Chakpikarong PS on February 13, the same has been handed over to the Imphal

West Police Commandos during an alleged shoot out at the crossing of
Keishamthong Elangbam Leikai Leirak Achouba Maning and Longjam Leirak under
Imphal Police Station last night was an innocent civilian, local people blocked
the Tiddim Road for sometime today.
The slain person has been identified as Pebam Inao alias Ojit (40) s/o late
Pakchao of Kwakeithel Lamdong. He was a married man having four children, two
daughters and two sons. However, according to police report, Inao was earlier
arrested in connection with a case under FIR No. 206 (11) 04 u/s 25(1-A)/1-AA) A
Act and 400/511/34 IPC of Singjamei Police Station for belonging to a gang of
arms dealer/supplier for extortion.
Intelligence input revealed that he was actively involved in extorting money in
the name of KCP and PREPAK, SP of Imphal West District Clay Khongsai said.

Four MU deans released after

IMPHAL, Jan 31: Four deans of different
departments of the Manipur University were reportedly detained by some
unidentified persons suspected to be cadres of an underground group early
Thursday and later released unharmed tonight.
The four officials who were abducted were the dean of department of humanities,
O Ibochou, dean of students, Md Islamuddin, dean of life sciences, PS Jadav and
dean of history, Mangsatabam Jiten. Jiten had taken the charge as the dean on
January 21, reports said.
Reports said that they were taken into custody by the miscreants today at around
5.30 am and later released tonight at around 7.30 pm.

Man suffers burns in alleged

IMPHAL, Jan 31: A 45-year old man suffered 34 per
cent burn injuries in a bizarre incident last night when someone allegedly
attempted to burn him alive while he was asleep.
The victim, identified as Ngangom Jilla, of Gwaltabi, at present staying at
Mongnijang village of Saikul subdivision in Senapati district, was admitted to
RIMS hospital last night with burns at his face, abdomen, private parts and
face.
The victim, questioned by mediapersons this morning at the hospital, claimed
that an unknown person had attempted to burn him alive after dousing him with
kerosene while he was asleep inside the kitchen of his house.

dead at the bus waiting shed of Leimakhong Chingmang under Sekmai Police Station
at around 6.45 pm yesterday.

hospitalised after he was shot at by two unidentified gunmen suspected to be UGs
yesterday evening at Kakwa bazar under Singjamei police station.
The injured man, identified as Konthoujam Pilot of Singjamei Thongam Leikai was
reportedly shot with a single bullet at his left thigh by two unidentified
gunmen inside his shop at Kakwa bazar at around 7.15 pm yesterday without citing

Shillong: The bodies of two unidentified men, both in their forties,
were found by Sadar police personnel on February 1. One was found dead on the
stairs behind Hotel Polo Towers, Shillong while the body of the other was found
on the premises of Shillong Civil Hospital. The deceased were taken to Shillong
Civil Hospital for post-mortem. No one has come forward to claim the bodies so

against the killing of a businessman. A bandh was observed in Chumukedima town
near Dimapur. Poultry vendor Podurul Islam was abducted by militants from New
Market some days back. His body was recovered from 4th Mile on Saturday. Islam’s
captors killed him after his relatives had failed to pay the ransom of Rs

a high level inquiry into the shooting incident at Thambalkhong, in Imphal east
district, on February 7 evening in which a youth who had allegedly been picked

A commitment in this regard was made by chief minister O Ibobi Singh today in a

government ordered Monday an enquiry into the facts and circumstances leading to
the controversial death of Md Qudus Ali alias Bobocha, 22, son of Md Hayat Ali
of Urup Makha Leikai.
Mention may be made that Qudus was shot dead by a combined team of Imphal east
commandos and 32 Assam Rifles on the night of February 7 last at Naharup Makha
Leikai Ningol Khul.
Even though police claimed that he was killed in an encounter (as noted in the
FIR case no. 38 (2)2008 under section 400/307 IPC and 25 (1-C) Arms Act of
Porompat police station), the family members of the deceased have made claims
that the facts were contrary to what was reported in the case.

Front of Boroland (NDFB) has condemned a section of the press for accusing the
organization of being involved in the abduction of one Dipak Sikaria, a
businessman from Baksa district.
The NDFB, through a press release, has said that it is under a ceasefire
agreement with the Government of India and that the statement of the

Lachit Bordoloi and Sumanta Dutta, an employee of an outsourcing company of Air
Deccan, were produced before the Subdivisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) D
Ullah’s court here today. The court has sent both Bordoloi and Dutta to five-day
police remand.
Lachit Bordoloi’s counsel BK Mahajan argued in the court that, in accordance
with the Sections 166 and 167 of IPC, no accused can be sent to police remand
without the production of the police diary. The court, however, granted five-day
police remand for each of Bordoloi and Dutta though the police demanded 10-day
remand. The activists of the MASS shouted slogans in favour of Lachit Bordoloi
inside the court.

IMPHAL, Feb 14: Following a complaint regarding the alleged enforced
disappearance of a civilian after being arrested by the security forces, the
Manipur Human Rights Commission has issued a directive asking the police to
conduct a high level inquiry into the case.
One Abi Chiru, 18 son of Poabung Chiru of Uran Chiru village, Senapati district
has reportedly been missing since he was arrested by the personnel of 24 AR
posted at Moreh Border town near the Moreh gate No. 2 (Namphalong gate) on
January 27.

IMPHAL, Feb 14: Identity of the two remaining persons who
were among three gunned down on February 12 at near Sinam Kom village under
Khundrakpam AC has been established today. While one of the body has been
identified as that of K Sunil alias Sanathoi alias Punshiba (24) s/o (L) K Rajen
of Phumlou Mamang Leikai the other is said to be one Ningthoujam Betani alias
Angouba (30) s/o N Tomba of Kairenphabi Ma-yai leikai.

International rights body calls
for Lachit Bordoloi`s release (IFP_16_2_k8)
IMPHAL, Feb 15: The Observatory for the Protection of Human
Rights Defenders, a joint programme of the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT)
and the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) has made an appeal for
the early release of peace activist and journalist Lachit Bordoloi who was
picked up by the police in Assam recently.
The appeal sent to the Centre for Organisation Research and Education (CORE) for
mass circulation has called on people from all walks of life to write to the
Indian authorities for taking all necessary measures to guarantee, in all
circumstances, the physical and psychological integrity of Lachit Bordoloi;
Release Lachit Bordoloi immediately and unconditionally, as his detention is
arbitrary since it only aims at sanctioning his human rights activities;

Two bodies
found
HAFLONG, Feb 17: Unidentified gunmen shot dead two youths in the hill
district of North Cachar today, police said. The assailants shot dead the two
youths and dumped their bodies near Debarai village under Haflong police
station. The bodies were found later. The youths have been identified as Utpal
Chakraborty and Ronji Hojai. Police have started investigation to find out the
motive behind the crime and track down the culprits. – Correspondent

IMPHAL, Feb 16: Some unidentified gunmen suspected to be underground PREPAK
cadres shot dead a youth this evening around 7.45 pm at Laphupat Tera Laimang
under Thoubal police station.
According to reliable sources, the incident occurred when about four armed men
suspected to be PREPAK cadres brought an unidentified youth at the outskirts of
Laphupat Terakhunou Laimang this evening and shot at his head at point blank
range.

IMPHAL, Feb 17: The Communist Party of India`s general secretary, AB Bardhan
today strongly censured the Indian National Congress for its apparent
endorsement of the demand for integration of Naga-inhabited areas of the
north-east under a single administration in the election manifesto released for
the forthcoming Nagaland elections.
Bardhan, who was speaking at the inaugural session of the 19th state conference
of the CPI, Manipur unit, at the Hapta Kangjeibung, Imphal, today, said the
inclusion of the matter in the election manifesto was in violation of the common
minimum programme of the United Progressive Alliance, UPA, in power at the
Centre. This election gimmick will not have good consequences, he warned.

IMPHAL, Feb 16: The underground organisations, it seems, are not the only
ones committing extortion and levying illegal taxes on transporters plying on
the national highways. Given the chance, even the Assam Rifles are also doing
it, going by an allegation made by the All Manipur Truck Owners` and Drivers`
Welfare Association.
According to the association, 12 trucks from Imphal heading for Jiribam with a
consignment of iron scraps had to return to Imphal today after being held up for
two days at Keithelmanbi village on NH-53 because they failed to pay an
exorbitant `tax` demanded of them by Assam Rifles personnel manning a post
there.

IMPHAL, Feb 16: A stir is in the offing in connection with the disappearance
of 18-year old Abee Chiru, of Uran Chiru village in Lamlai Assembly segment, who
has been missing after he was picked up by Assam Rifles troops on January 27 at
Moreh, with a public meeting held today at his native village deciding to launch
a boycott of the Assam Rifles in all Kom areas unless he is released.
The public meeting, held today at the Uran Chiru community hall, decided to
issue an ultimatum demanding Abee Chiru`s release within two days.

inquiry into the alleged attempted extortion by Assam Rifles personnel from
trucks transporting scrap metals along NH-53.
Speaking at the inaugural function of the 19th State Conference of the CPI
Manipur State Unit at Palace Compound here today, Bardhan asked as to under what
authority the Assam Rifles are levying tax upon trucks travelling along the
Imphal-Silchar National Highway.

Rojit s/o Kamini of Kangpokpi by Imphal East commandos on February 15 at Hatta
Golapati, a protest was staged today at Kangpokpi Bazar. Moreover, the JAC
constituted in connection with the killing has threatened to call a 48 hours
State wide bandh with effect from February 19 midnight in case no understanding
is reached with the Government by tomorrow.

IMPHAL, Feb 21:A man was found dead near a meat outlet at North AOC
under Imphal Police Station at around 5 am today. The deceased appears to be a
Nepali and around 36 years of age. His ear lobes were pierced and hair cut short
with wheatish complexion. The body was found clad in a grey colour jogging suit,
red T-shirt and a jersey of coffee colour with stripes of white and grey. It is
suspected that he may have been clubbed to death. There were injury marks on his
body. Police have picked up the body and kept the same at RIMS morgue for
identification.

Guwahati, Feb. 21: Militants belonging to the National
Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) aided by colleagues from Nagaland abducted a
trader from the Panjan area under the Sarupathar police station in Golaghat
district last night. Dilip Agarwalla, a rice trader and his associate Moron Das,
were travelling on a motorcycle from Nawjan to Panjan when four armed youths
accosted them at gunpoint and took them away.

small-time trader, was killed during a drunken brawl in the heart of the town,
police are clueless about the whereabouts of the murderers.Chettry, 26, was

Imphal, Feb. 26 (PTI): Security personnel shot
two alleged militants, Th. Suranjoy and Y. Dhamen, at Kongba in Manipur’s Imphal
East district. However their families have denied that they were rebels.Official
sources said a team of police and Assam Rifles commandos shot the two last night
after they failed to stop their car during a routine check and opened fire when
challenged. A 9mm pistol and some ammunition were recovered from them, sources
said.

IMPHAL, Feb 26: `Tell me how I can live with two children without him. We
lived on a meager income he earned as a salesman," cried the young woman, wife
of Suranjoy, who was killed by a combined force of Assam Rifles and Imphal east
commandos late yesterday evening at Kongba Nongthonbam Leikai.
Two men who were shot dead by the combined forces were identified today and they
happened to be a shopkeeper, Yumkham Dhamen, 30 years, hailing from Lilong
Chajing and his salesman, Thongam Suranjoy Singh, 28 years, son of Th Birkumar
Singh of Yumnam Huidrom.

Imphal, Feb. 22: A teenager from Senapati district of
Manipur has accused the Assam Rifles of arbitrary detention and torture in
custody in Moreh as a human rights group is preparing to take the matter to
court. Abi Chiru, 18, alleged that the troops of the 24 Assam Rifles posted at
Moreh in Chandel district of Manipur apprehended him on January 27 at Moreh’s
international border gate 2 and released him on Wednesday. He was visiting the
border town when he was picked up, he alleged. The troops had accused him of
being a member of a banned outfit, he said.

examinees were injured when police resorted to blank firing to disperse a mob
inside an examination centre at Chirakuti Higher Secondary School in Assam’s

P.K Nath, said a member of the examination conduct committee of the centre,

IMPHAL, Feb 26: Volunteers of the Mongsangei Sun Club rescued a minor boy who
was abandoned by three kidnappers at Mongsangei area this evening around 5 pm.
According to the local sources, the victim was found loitering around a local
street at Mongsangei by the local club volunteers and later was given proper
care by the local club members of the Mongsangei Sun Club and later handed over
to the Singjamei police station around 7.30 pm this evening.

Two shot dead in Manipur(SEN_27_2_k8)
IMPHAL, Feb 26: Two suspected underground cadres were shot dead by a
combined force of Imphal East Police and personnel of 32 Assam Rifles in an
encounter at Kongba Nongthombam Leikai Imphal East last night. Police identified
the two as Thangjam Suranjoy and Yengkhom Daman. Police said the two came in a
car and fired at a police team who killed the two in retaliation. One 9 mm
pistol and a hand grenade were recovered. (UNI)
