A rash of
killings that police claimed were linked began in Manipur last night and
culminated today in gunmen brazenly walking into an automobile workshop and
pumping bullets into a school principal. Laishram Ibosana, 37, was getting his
car checked at Wangkhei Angom Leikai, on the outskirts of Imphal West, around
10am when three youths arrived and opened fire without warning. …more……

Jan. 18:
A bunch of rapists who forced themselves on a teenaged girl got away with a fine
of Rs 26,000, courtesy the benevolence of village jurors whose collective wisdom
could think of little more than a wad of notes as the perfect punishment. This
travesty of justice would have gone unnoticed had the Kokrajhar unit of the All
India Democratic Women’s Association not intervened and brought it to the notice

Protest meet(TEL, 11-1-08)

The residents
of Wangoi in Imphal West held a protest meeting today against the killing of
Wangkheimayum Sanatomba, an assistant inspector of schools. The police said
unidentified men shot the official at his Wangoi Wahengbam Leikai home at
7.30pm. No group has claimed responsibility for the killing. The meeting
demanded a clarification from the killers and also urged the government to
punish the culprits.

director-general of police, Assam, R.N. Mathur, has for the first time lashed
out at the human rights organisations backed by militant outfits for cooking up
charges against security forces. The Assam DGP was speaking at a national
seminar on Social Justice and Human Rights and 21st Century organised by the
National Human Rights Commission in conjunction with the Assam Human Rights

another injured by unidentified persons at Sira-rakhong near Somdal in Ukhrul

One shot dead

A youth was shot dead by unidentified
gunmen at Hanu Chingmai Khong-nungpokpi, about 6 kms North of Yairipok police
station at about 10.10 last night. The deceased is identified as one Doulat Khan
(26) s/o Md Tomba of Yairipok Changamdabi Makha Leikai. It is repor-ted that
Doulat Khan was engaged in quarrying sand from river beds. He left home last
morning. He was hit by two bullets in the face, one in the neck, another one in
the left side of chest and one more in the right side of abdomen. Post mortem
was conducted at Lilong PHC before it was handed over to the family members
today.

IMPHAL, Jan 18 : All the bodies of
the three men shot dead by unidentified men at Wangkhei Angom Leikai last
morning have been claimed by their respective families after post mortem at RIMS
morgue today. The deceased are Nameirakpam Somorjit of Heirangoi-thong Maibam
Leikai, Ningthoujam Bijoy of Kha-Sanjenbam and Laishram Ibosana of Nambol
Kha-Sanjenbam. Meanwhile, with the establishment of the identity of the youth
shot dead by commandos at Kongpal Sajor Leikai yesterday, the body has been
handed over to family members after completing post mortem at RIMS today. The
deceased was one Maibam Sanatomba (24) s/o Chandramohon of Lairikyengbam Leikai

IMPHAL, Jan 18: After six days of captivity, the Khullakpa of
Tombihangbu Kom village S Akhup Kom alias Ramesh was set free by his abductors
last night. On ransom demand of Rs 2 lakhs, Akhup Kom had been reportedly
abducted by some armed persons who claimed themselves to be the cadres of KLA/KLO
from Andro Mamang Leikai area on January 11. He was released safely at around

Jan. 2:
An abducted
official of the Manipur education department returned home unharmed last night.
Salam Indrajit Singh, a section officer in the department’s engineering cell,
was abducted by suspected militants from the office of the directorate of school
education here on December 15. Singh today said the abductors released him at
Singjamei parking near his Chingamathak home in Imphal West around 8pm, after
which he went back home alone.

Jan. 3: Goalpara was deceptively calm and the government clearly hassled
a day after police firing on violent bandh enforcers left seven dead, forcing
the postponement of panchayat elections in the entire district. The Tarun Gogoi
government instituted a judicial inquiry into the police firing and the State
Election Commission (SEC) sent out a stern message to the civil and police heads
of the other districts to make proper security and polling arrangements or face

alias Nanao, Ningombam Rome Meitei, Okram Deben alias Arnold, Letkhosei Haokip
alias James Kuki and Sorokhaibam Surjit alias Sobha as the accused in the case.

The twin firing
incidents in two Garo Hills districts in 2005 that left nine persons dead and
several injured have returned to haunt the Congress-led coalition, the Meghalaya
Democratic Alliance, ahead of the Assembly elections in February. Accepting a
public interest litigation filed by the relatives of three victims of the
firing, Gauhati High Court last evening directed the Meghalaya government to
reply within three weeks as to why an inquiry by the CBI should not be ordered

businessman with a militant past was found dead today, one side of his face
mutilated by killers with whom he may have downed a few pegs overnight. Anil
Kakoti alias Deep Bora, 36, is the second businessman to be murdered in the
capital city this week. The resemblance does not end there. Like Najimul Islam,
who took two bullets in the head after being followed from a New Year party in
the wee hours of Wednesday, Kakoti owned an automobile workshop and had a stake

some unidentified persons at Sugnu Makha Leikai Heining Makhong under Sugnu
police station at about 9.50 last night. With the completion of post mortem
examination, the corpse has been handed over to family members today.

Sharmila weakens

IMPHAL, Jan 2 : Irom Chanu Sharmila has reportedly refused regular nasal feeding
since December 17 – a day after the Pourabi bomb blast.
According to a statement issued by the Human Rights Alert, its executive
director called on the hunger striker on December 31 during which Sharmila
recounted images of the blast victims when brought to the JN Hospital and her
subsequent refusal to forgo all artificial feedings into her body.

year old boy was killed while his father sustained injuries. The incident took

IMPHAL, Jan 3 : A youth suspected to be a thief was thrashed to death
by a mob at Andro Khampokpi under Yairipok police station at about 10 pm
yesterday.
The deceased is identified as Puthem Basanta (27) s/o Mani of Andro Makha Leikai.
He reportedly left home at about 6.30 pm. At about 10 pm, the family members
were informed that Basanta had been nabbed by local people of Khampokpi while

Thongkhong in Thou- bal district on December 31 last is yet to be claimed by
anybody even as the JAC formed in connection with the killing has announced its
decision of intensifying the ongoing stir until a clarification has been
provided by the unknown killers.

IMPHAL, Jan 3: The JAC formed in connection with the killing of chief
of H Gamnom Village Hemkho-gin Haokip by unidentified gunmen during a meeting
held at Sugnu yesterday has demanded to know the reason for the killing from all
concerned. The meeting resolved that in case personal enmity is motive behind
the killing then the killers should surrender to the JAC. Otherwise, JAC should
not be held accountable for the arrest of the killers by the security personnel.

persons travelling in a van were abducted by some unidentified persons from near
Maram along NH 39 at about 6.30 last morning. According to information received
by press, the 3 persons were coming to Imphal from Dimapur. The van in which
they were travelling is blue in colour and bears registration number MN01K-9633.

 IMPHAL, Jan 9: Strongly contending that Abujam Shidam is  an
innocent civilian, the JAC Against the Arrest of Abujam  Shidam and various
other social organisations have urged the State Government to release Shidam
within 48 hours without any condition. A public meeting convened by  the JAC at
Keibi Salam today condemned the alleged arbitrary arrest of Shidam in the
strongest term. Questioning the allegations raised against Shidam in
intelligence reports of the State Government, the JAC remarked that if Shidam is
guilty, no people in Manipur is innocent.

Two skeletal remains found

IMPHAL, Jan 1: Skeletal remains of two humans were retrieved by the
police from a hill in between Lamlai and Kamuching some two kilometer south east
of Lamlai police station today and deposited at the RIMS morgue for necessary
official procedures.
According to the police, the remains were discovered by some firewood collectors
of the nearby hills who informed the police through the villagers.

at them near Geleky along the Asom-Nagaland border in Sivasagar district at
around 9:30 pm on Tuesday succumbed to their bullet injuries on Wednesday.  It
may be mentioned here that Tirtharanjan Bora and Raju Dey, the two car lifters,
fled away with the car of one Jitu Hussain after killing him.

went missing from remote locations of

Tripura
during past 23 days, police said here
today. The report said the missing youths were suspected to have joined militant
organization and undergoing training in Bangladesh. Parents of one of the youth
have alleged that a former militant had tried to lure their son into militancy.

incidents on non-Rabha mobs at Lakhipur in Goalpara district. Night curfew has
been claimed in Lakhipur area in the district.  According to police sources,
during the Ana-Rabha Samanvay Aikya Mancha (ARSAM)-sponsored 48-hour national
highway blockade that began from 5 am today, thousands of non-Rabhas took to the

unidentified miscreants at Narikalbasti under the Geetanagar police station in
Guwahati in the wee hours today. According to police sources, six persons have

NPF supporter shot dead

KOHIMA, Jan 3: A Nagaland Peoples’ Front (NPF) supporter was
shot dead by a Congress activist at Kangtsung village under Tuli Assembly
Constituency in Mokokchung district of Nagaland. Police said here today that one
Zulunungba (25), a supporter of NPF Legislator T Tali of the Tuli Assembly
Constituency, was shot dead by a rival Congress supporter yesterday. The
assailant fled after committing the crime.
A case had been registered and a hunt was on to apprehend the killer, police

sharp weapon in his hand and attacked his elder brother with it. Deben Murari

Garden Hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, he died before reaching the

Armed Forces Tribunal gets President’s assent

President Pratibha Patil has given her assent to a Bill to establish a tribunal
to adjudicate disputes and complaints of armed forces personnel relating to
appointments, enrolment and service conditions. Patil signed the Bill on
December 25, 2007 but the official announcement about this was made only on
Monday. Parliament passed the Bill in the first week of December.

GUWAHATI, Jan 2 – Though the
level of violence in Assam increased in 2007, the militant groups also suffered
severe setbacks in the counter-insurgency operations as more than a hundred
militants were killed. According to records available with the police, more than
500 incidents of violence involving the militant outfits were reported from
different parts of Assam last year and as many as 286 civilians were killed and
around 750 others received injuries. Police sources pointed out that the attack
on Hindi speaking people in the upper Assam districts in the first part of the
year by militants belonging to the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA)
resulted in the increase of the death toll, while, the attacks by joint teams of
ULFA and KLNLF in the district of Karbi Anglong also added to the number of

Workers’ Day on Sunday, which was originally scheduled for January 9, but was

One shot dead

A youth was shot dead by unidentified
gunmen at Hanu Chingmai Khong-nungpokpi, about 6 kms North of Yairipok police
station at about 10.10 last night. The deceased is identified as one Doulat Khan
(26) s/o Md Tomba of Yairipok Changamdabi Makha Leikai. It is repor-ted that
Doulat Khan was engaged in quarrying sand from river beds. He left home last
morning. He was hit by two bullets in the face, one in the neck, another one in
the left side of chest and one more in the right side of abdomen. Post mortem
was conducted at Lilong PHC before it was handed over to the family members

was an innocent civilian, the Kuki Movement for Human Rights (KUMUR) has
demanded a judicial enquiry into the killing. In a memorandum submitted to the
Chief Minister in-charge, KUMUR also demanded suspension of the guilty commando
personnel and compensation to the family of the victim.

suspected UG at a place in between Heinoubok and Moirang Hanuba under Lamphel
Police Station at around 7 pm today. Information received by the press said that

MN01M-0300, when the incident occurred. The driving license recovered from the

office today, the corpse of Raju has been claimed by family members after post

Raju s/o Sandham Kaoba of Moirang Chengei Leikai but staying at Salem Veng,
Churachandpur was shot dead by personnel of 3 AR on the charge of being a UG
cadre in the night of January 21, According to the MoU signed today, the
Government should institute a Departmental enquiry within a week and should take
up due legal actions against all those found guilty. In case Sandham Raju was

Man’s

A 40-year old man has been hospitalised at RIMS after his throat
was slit and the left eye damaged allegedly by three persons at a spot in
between Upokpi and Potsangbam under Bishnupur Police Station at around 9.30 pm
yesterday. The man who has been admitted to RIMS Hospital is identified as
Khwairampam Bimol (40) of Thanga, but staying at Upokpi where he has a farm. The
three persons who allegedly attacked him have also been identified as Khagembam

IMPHAL, Jan 24: "My son`s life was a long
struggle. He used to pull rickshaw, helped in transporting maida for the mayang
mahajon and did many odd jobs. Now that he is beginning to do well, they shot
him dead mercilessly." Sixty-six years old Laishram Memma, mother of the
deceased Laishram Ibobi, said the above with tears welling up in her eyes. Ibobi
was killed by Imphal West police commandos on 22nd January at around 7:15 pm at
Kwakeithel Mayai Koibi.

 SONARI, Jan 22: Girish Barua of
Bhojogaon under Sonari police station allegedly strangulated his wife Rupamoni
Gohain on Sunday night. Sources said that Borua killed his 35-year-old wife, who
was a teacher of Bhojo ME school at a godown. Sources added that he also set the
godown on fire after putting his wife to death. Later, reports said that the
Village defence party reached Barua’s house and put the fire under control.

Government asks police

Accidental pistol shot

Imphal, Jan. 27:
An Assam Rifles officer on counter-insurgency duty in
Manipur “accidentally” shot himself last night, his unit informed police and his
family today.  The paramilitary force said Capt Bachaspatimayum Lakhikanta
Sharma, 33, was patrolling Aishi village in Ukhrul district around 10.30pm when
a bullet from his 9mm pistol lodged itself on the left side of his neck. He died
instantly.

A father and his mentally unstable son fell into
the well in the courtyard of their home today and remained there for six hours
before rescue workers pulled them up, the older man dead by then. Wali Mohammad
Ali, 50, had spent the night away from home and was possibly worked up over
something when he returned around 5am and called out the younger of his two
sons, 18-year-old Zuman, to the courtyard of their residence at Kailash Nagar in
Noonmati.

Police launched a search for abducted PWD assistant engineer Sorokhaibam Menjor
Singh while security was beefed up at the department today even as its employees
blamed the Okram Ibobi Singh government for failing to protect them. Menjor
Singh was abducted by the Umar Farooq faction of the Peoples United Liberation
Front (PULF) from near the gate of his office here at 4pm on January 24. The
abduction came to light only when the outfit claimed responsibility for it last
evening.
