Shylla latest victim of Congress ‘use and throw’ policy?

SHILLONG: Adding a new twist to the
twin issues of proposed uranium mining and HS Shylla’s recent removal as CPP
leader in KHADC, NCP on Sunday claimed that Mr Shylla was actually
remote-controlled by Chief Minister DD Lapang and MPCC president OL Nongtdu to
carry forward the Congress campaign for uranium mining in Meghalaya. With the
Union Ministry of Environment and Forest giving environmental clearance to UCIL
to mine uranium in the State, MPCC decided to dump Mr Shylla, fearing that
continuing the campaign for uranium mining in the face of strong public
opposition could jeopardise the Congress’ chances in the coming Assembly
elections, NCP said.

Oil,
gas conservation fortnight observed

 GUWAHATI, Jan 16 – The need
to conserve oil and gas, the scarce and exhaustible energy resources Guwahati
Refinery, along with other oil and gas public sector undertakings throughout the
country, is observing Oil and Gas Conservation Fortnight with a number of
programmes from January 15 – 31 to further enhance awareness among all, stated a
press release. The theme this year is ‘Save Oil, Save Gas, Save our Children’.

SDRC for ‘strip mining’ in
Meghalaya

SHILLONG, Jan 12 – The State Development Reforms Commission (SDRC)
today recommended ‘strip mining’ to check environmental degradation in Meghalaya.
The SDRC, in its report submitted to Chief Minister D D Lapang, recommended to
the State Government to take urgent steps in “encouraging scientific mining
practices,” and preserve the environment. Its chairman and former Chief
Minister, EK Mawlong heads the Commission.

blockade foiled

 DIBRUGARH, Jan 4: Altogether
seventy activists of the Tingkhong Udyugik Janasartha Sammity were rounded up
today while attempting to obstruct works of the Oil India Limited (OIL),
Duliajan at Shalmari OCS under Tingkhong PS, police sources informed. The
Sammity staged oil blockade at various oil installations in Tingkhong area
during its 36-hour oil obstructions today in support of their demand for
employment to at least hundred youths of the area.

threatens to move SC over uranium issue(SHT, 10th January
2008)


SHILLONG:

Taking serious note of environmental clearance given by Union Ministry of
Environment and Forest to UCIL for uranium mining in the State, Meghalaya
People’s Human Rights Commission (MPHRC) has appealed to the Lapang-led
Government not to bow down to Centre’s "pressure tactic" and threatened to move
the Supreme Court if the State Government issued no objection certificate to the
Corporation to go ahead with the project.

Don’t mislead people on uranium, HNLC tells Govt(SHT, 12th January
2008)


Shillong:

Seeking to re-establish its withering
impact on the people of the State, the HNLC has asked the State Government not
to mislead the people in the name of "economic progress," while cautioning any
individual or organisation against supporting the proposed uranium mining in the
State for personal interests. Stating that uranium was a natural resource and
belonged to indigenous tribals of the State, HNLC in a statement issued here on
Thursday said "the Central Government has no authority to decide on this
matter." "The HNLC will not respect any law passed by the Central Government or
the Supreme Court if it is in conflict with the interests of local indigenous
population of the State," the outfit said.

Shillong:

The Hynniewtrep National People’s
Federation (HNPF) has set a ten day deadline to the State Government and Jaintia
Hills district authorities to impose trading licence on Munshis (agents)
dealing in coal trade in Jaintia Hills. Addressing a press conference, HNPF
president Ronnie Rani said that the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC)
had failed to impose trading license on Munshis who were presently carrying out
coal trade freely.

Natl leaders’ intervention
in uranium issue sought(SHT_25_1_k8)

Shillong: The Langrin Youth Welfare Association (LYWA) has called for
intervention of national leaders including the Prime Minister to stop mining of
uranium in West Khasi Hills. In a statement, the Association said letters had
been sent to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the Managing Director of Atomic
Energy, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Union Minister of Tribal Affairs PR Kyndiah,
Robert Kharshiing, MP Rajya Sabha, expressing opposition to set up any uranium
project at Photkylleng-Pyndengsohiong under Langrin Syiemship by any company.

chakka bandh peaceful

 DIBRUGARH,
January 23 — The first day of the 1000-hour statewide chakka bandh of all
vehicles of Oil India Limited (OIL) called by the All Assam Mottock Yuba Chatra
Sanmilan in support of their demand for Rs 100 crore welfare package from OIL
for the Mottock community passed off peacefully. OIL operations were
particularly affected in some parts of Dibrugarh and Tinsukia district. –Staff

OIL blockade from tomorrow preventing the movement of all mode of OIL’s
transport in Dibrugarh district.

urged to stop seismic survey(SEN_23_1_k8)

 TINSUKIA, Jan
22: The Toilokhetra Gana Sartha Suraksha Samity (TGSSS), Tinsukia district
committee, has expressed strong resentment against the alleged motive of the Oil
India Limited (OIL) to start a seismic survey in the heart of the

Brahmaputra.
TGSSS president Ratan Singh stated that more than 33,000 families have been
depending on the river through the fish trade. He alleged that the survey would
cause water, land, sound pollution, which may threaten the flora and fauna
including the river dolphin, which is almost on the verge of extinction. The
TGSSS has also threatened to launch a strong movement against OIL.
