to make submissions on the November 24 mayhem in Beltola before the very one-man
commission in which it had expressed lack of confidence. The volte-face came on
a day when the city’s former senior superintendent of police, Surendra Kumar,
representatives of the NGO Northeast Network, the officer-in-charge of Dispur
police station, N. Bharali, and retired commissioner N.B. Borthakur appeared

Itanagar, Feb. 5:

The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union today claimed that 39 students were
abducted by the Khaplang faction of the NSCN from six villages in Tirap district
last month but the police and district administration have done nothing to
ensure their release. The apex students’ organisation of Arunachal Pradesh today
served an ultimatum to the government saying that it would launch a statewide
agitation if the children were not released within 10 days.Some of those

Kohima, Jan. 8:

The Nagaland government today decided to allow students of private schools from
the four Naga-dominated hills districts of Manipur to appear for the HSLC
examinations under the Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE), ignoring
protests from Manipur. The government said the students, including those sitting
for the repeat exams, would be allowed to sit for the examination on fulfilment
of certain conditions. Last year, at least 4,000 students from Senapati,
Tamenglong, Ukhrul and Chandel districts of Manipur appeared for the HSLC
examination conducted by NBSE in Kohima and Dimapur under heavy security, in
view of the threat from the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang).

fields are of the opinion that the Bodo youths of both the sexes need to be

Park here, where around 500 picnic parties flock on January 1 every year,
Ramfalbil Anchalik Committee president of All Bodo Women Welfare Forum (ABWWF)

Confusion over abduction of KSU leader

SHILLONG, Jan 2: The denial of the Hynniewtrep National Liberation
Council (HNLC) of its involvement in the abduction of a senior functionary of
the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on December 16 has made many to speculate. The
president of KSU’s Dawki circle, Fairshall Kongwang, was kidnapped by
unidentified gunmen on December 16. The subsequent arrest and revelations
indicated that the HNLC men were involved in the kidnapping of Kongwang from
Umkrem village near the Indo-Banglaesh border. Police sources have been

starting from its office to the main secretariat on January 7. The following day

Tinsukia districts in the past few months has prompted the NSUI to serve an
ultimatum on BSNL, demanding immediate improvement of services or face an
agitation. An NSUI delegation met the BSNL authorities here on Friday and sought
an explanation why services have reached frustrating levels. On behalf of the
BSNL, deputy general manager Chattopadhyay said work is on to improve the mobile

office picketing concludes(SHT, 10th January
2008)

The two-day
KSU-sponsored office picketing against the decision of the State Government on
power projects ended peacefully on Wednesday but it continued to affect
government functioning with most offices in the city and headquarters of Khasi
and Jaintia Hills districts registering skeletal attendance. Most of the State
Government offices in the city were more or less empty and functioned with only
senior officials turning up for duty. The Main Secretariat wore a deserted look
due to scanty number of employees attending office.

SHILLONG:
The KSU has decided to suspend its agitation against the controversial power
deal in view of the State Cabinet meeting scheduled for January 17. Taking to
reporters after KSU’s Central Executive Committee meeting here on Thursday, KSU
president Samuel Jyrwa expressed surprise over Power Minister Mukul Sangma’s
statement that the power deal was reached in a transparent manner. The student
leader reiterated that the Cabinet decision to hand over electricity projects to
private companies violated the State Power Policy framed by the government
itself.

president Phersial Kongwang, who went messing under mysterious circumstances
about one month ago. Police had earlier claimed that Mr Kongwang was kidnapped
and taken to Bangladesh by suspected HNLC rebels. Mr Kongwang’s friends Stepping
Lamin and Sharky Lamin, who were reportedly with the KSU leader at the time of
his kidnapping, were also picked up for interrogation.

Sunday to protest against "discrimination" by the police and residents of Delhi
towards people from North East. A decision to this regard was taken up at a
meeting titled "Respecting Differences" which discussed the necessity of
accepting the plural identity of the north eastern people in the city. More

senior NCP leader Purno Sangma has termed the Cabinet decision to put the power
deal on hold as a "victory of the people."

"This is a victory of the people of
Meghalaya. The MDA Government signed the deal with private companies without
letting the people know the terms and conditions contained in the MoAs," Mr
Sangma said at a function held for releasing NCP’s poll manifesto on Friday. Mr

Shillong, Jan 18: Expressing his opposition to the alarming influx
from Bangladesh, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) general secretary PA Sangma
today said the Assam Accord had failed to resolve the issue. “I had always
opposed the Assam Accord as its proposition cannot deal with the problem. Even
after 22 years of the signing of the accord, Asom has failed to resolve the

Protests
against killing (SEN_29_1_2008)

 TEZPUR, Jan 28: The President of Asom Gana
Parishad (AGP) Brindabon Goswami has expressed serious concern over the killing
of Naba Saikia, former publicity personnel of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU)
at Biswanath Chariali by the police on the suspicion of Saikia being a member of
an extremist outfit. Condemning the incident Goswami said that rather than
killing Saikia the police could have arrested him instead. Goswami expressing
his condolence to the bereaved family asked the Tarun Gogoi Governmnent to check
such random killings and demanded a thorough enquiry of the incident by an
independent authority.

stone laid(SEN_30_1_2008)

 TEOK, Jan 29: The foundation stone of the
bust of the former Asom Minister, Teok LAC Legislator and AASU Leader Lalit
Chandra Rajkhowa was laid by Haren Rajkhowa at the premises of Teok High School
playground recently on the occasion of the 18th death anniversary of the leader.
A general meeting was also held under the joint auspices of Jorhat

AASAA
calls Asom bandh (SEN_31_1_2008)

 GUWAHATI, Jan 30: The Justice (retired) RK
Manisana Singh Commission, investigating the November 24 Beltola incident, will
cross-examine Adivasi student leader Raphael Kuzur, currently in the custody of
Basistha police. The commission took the decision in this regard while
responding to an appeal made by All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (AASAA)
leader Jastin Lakra here today. Meanwhile, the AASAA has called a 24-hour Asom
bandh on February 1 demanding the unconditional release of Kuzur. The bandh,
which was originally called on January 31, has been deferred to February 1 in
view of the Me-Dam-Me-Phi. .
